Wheat harvest is now started in Lambton and if the sun would stay out for a few days in a row most of the wheat could be off the fields.

Now let’s talk about the higher price of food, the media says the cost of food is higher because corn is going into ethanol production and not to the food chain. I don’t think that is why, because that corn could be and some of it is being fed to livestock as DDG (dried distiller grain).

The main reason food cost is more is because it costs more to do anything in life, not because we are getting a fair price for our products that we grow. Yes the price for the top three crops are good right now but where have they been for the first part of this decade.

When the selling price went up so do all the input costs go up as well and I’m almost certain that they will not go down when the price of our products go down. We farm to feed people, yes that is true but we also farm to make a living to support our families.

Just a reminder take the time to look at the report called the Farmer share to see just how much that loaf of bread is actually the farmer’s share. We deserve to make a good life for our families.

Yours in farming
