Hot is the weather we have experienced this summer but as they say “You can hear the corn grow”. The crops have responded to heat and timely rains and for the most part are excellent in all areas of the county. Producers have been busy harvesting wheat and the second cut of hay.

Meanwhile OFA and LFA are working on your behalf. OFA continues to lobby governments on issues important to all farmers. Funding announced in the spring has not arrived and is not anticipated any time soon.

Source water protection is the latest environmental struggle we are faced with in the future. Farmers need to recognize meetings will be held about the Source Water Protection in August and your input is welcome. Government allows citizens to have a voice and this is your opportunity to be heard.

Locally, LFA has been out in the community “Farmers working for Farmers”. Recently they successfully launched the Farm Map promoting – “Value Added Businesses”. They have attended several events with their display having the opportunity to educate consumers about agriculture and what share farmers receive of the food dollar. LFA co-operated with the Lambton Cattlemen to donate hamburger to the food banks and cook hamburgers for several events in the county. This is the third year we have worked together on this endeavour.

Upcoming on the LFA calendar is the Regional Meeting August 23rd at Inwood which is your venue to elect your regional director plus hear an update by OFA staff about the organization.

The Lambton Federation of Agriculture has supported a variety of local organizations including Agricultural Societies, Agriculture in the Classroom, 4-H, Jr. Farmers, the local food banks , Farm Safety, EFP workshops and The Lambton Plowing Match.

The farm rallies of the past year showcased the frustration farmers feel during difficult economic times and LFA is trying to make a difference by assisting farmers any way possible.

Sincerely,
