A new study says Ontarians could save up to seven cents per litre at the pump.
The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association says that’s if the government moves ahead with its promise to mandate that ethanol be blended with gas.
The association says its study shows prices would go down because ethanol would increase overall gas supply.
Ethanol currently costs less than gas. It’s a renewable fuel made by distilling corn, wheat or barley to produce a high-quality alcohol.
In last fall’s election, the Liberals said they’d require that ethanol make up five per cent of gasoline by 2007, rising to 10 per cent by 2010.
Association president Kory Teneycke says his group is launching an ad campaign to let people know about the benefits of using ethanol.
