Submission to Information Session on Proposed Scrap Metal Bylaw of the City of Sarnia

With respect to the proposed twenty five dollar tax to utilize the local recyclers, we are concerned that the well intentioned fee may cause further issues.

Firstly, as farmers, we consider our Environmental Farm Plans very important, and part of those plans is to take scrap metal products to a recycler.  We understand that the City of Sarnia has recently declared a Climate Change Emergency, which is also admiral. However, the cost of such a fee could have the unintended consequence of smaller amounts of scrap being sent to the landfill, and larger items potentiallydropped off on side roads. This, of course, could become a significant issue, and clearly is not in the best interest of the environment.

Additionally, local recyclers could face a drop in business due to improper disposal, but also with customers driving toWallaceburg or London, thus taking their business and potentially jobs outside of Lambton County.

The clause that material under a pound would be tax free is a moot point; someone with that small of an amount is unlikely to take it to a recycler. The price of scrap is not that high to be bothered.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely for the board of the LFA,
