Lambton Farm Safety and the Lambton Federation of Agriculture will hold a farm information meeting on fire prevention in agricultural buildings, March 22 at the Wyoming branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Several barn fires have occurred in the area, and so bringing information on prevention and new technology to local farmers seems like a great opportunity, said Lambton Farm Safety member Agnes Dickenson.
She said she and her colleagues were inspired after attending a fire prevention meeting in Clinton that featured a presentation from Jacqui Empson Laporte of Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
“We try to host an information meeting every year on different topics,” Dickenson said. “After dealing with Jacqui … we asked her to bring it down to our county.”
The afternoon meeting will feature speakers including Empson Laporte, an environmental specialist, and Vicki Hilborn, an engineering specialist with OMAFRA.
Dickenson said some of the information will include new innovations in fire prevention, including a heat detecting device that can identify electrical wiring that could be a problem.
“There are a lot of things that they’ve been working with on this,” she said.
She added that Empson Laporte will also be touching on the Farm Emergency Sketch, an initiative she has been working on with local farmers. While still in its planning stages, the initiative is designed to help farmers provide local emergency service workers with an outline of their farm, which will in turn make everyone’s job easier in the case of an emergency.
Dickenson said next Thursday’s meeting is open to everyone, not just farmers.
Door prizes and refreshments will also be available at the event.
