Scholarships

Joyce Anderson Scholarship ($2,000)

• Administered by The Sarnia Community Foundation – Executive Director Mike Barron presented on their behalf.
• This year’s recipient was Sydney Goodreau from north of Croton.
• Sydney is enrolled at Redeemer University for a four year English degree with a special focus on creative writing.
• Sydney has written a few young adult novels already and hopes to be published one day.

Bill and Dorothy Abraham Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient was Pavla Gerrits from Petrolia.
• Pavla is enrolled at the University of Guelph for a four-year Animal Biology degree.
• Pavla is planning on going to Ontario Veterinary College to continue on to become a veterinarian.

Patrick and Timothy Kerrigan Scholarship ($1,000)

• The Kerrigan scholarship was started in 1988 (with funding replenished in 2021 upon the passing of Tim).
• This year’s recipient was Dayna Robbins from Mooretown.
• Dayna is in year 2 towards a four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Lambton College and hopes to become a Registered Nurse at a local facility.

Bell One Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient was Samuel Thomas from Mooretown.
• Samuel is enrolled at the University of Guelph in Ridgetown for an Associate Diploma in Agriculture and hopes to continue working in the agriculture sector, or learn a trade.

Bell Two Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient was Tim Bastiaansen from Thedford.
• Tim is enrolled at the University of Guelph in Ridgetown for an Associate Diploma in Agriculture and hopes to take over the family’s layer farm as well as get into some cash cropping.

Dona Stewardson Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient was Nikki Boere from Warwick Township.
• Nikki is enrolled at McMaster University, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, in her fourth year.
• Nikki is hoping to work in a critical care setting, such as an emergency department once she graduates and becomes a registered nurse.
• Nikki also was awarded the Lois Wakefield scholarship in 2021.

Lois Wakefield Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient was Mallory Forbes from Sarnia.
• Mallory is enrolled at Western University for a four year psychology degree.
• Mallory is hoping to continue her education to become an Occupational Therapist.

Don McCabe (4H) Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient was Addison Griffin from Sarnia.
• Addison is enrolled in the 4 year Kinesiology Bachelor of Arts program at Western University.
• Addison is hoping to continue studies towards becoming a physiotherapist.

Lambton County Women’s Institute Scholarship ($1,000)

• In 2021, the Lambton County Women’s Institute entrusted the LFA with money to continue the scholarship in their name.
• This year’s recipient was Tyler McGrail from Wyoming.
• Tyler is enrolled at University of Guelph for the Justice and Legal Studies program with the hope of becoming a lawyer.

• Morgan is currently employed in a student role at Farm Credit Canada and hopes to return in a full time position after graduation while staying involved in some capacity with the family layer/pullet farming operation or greenhouse business.

• This year’s recipient was Laura Vandendool from St. Clair Township.
• Laura is enrolled in the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus’s Associate Diploma in Agriculture (two-year program).
• Laura hopes to continue studies towards a certificate in artificial insemination with the possibility of continuing education at the University of Guelph to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture.

• This year’s recipient was Ashley Sawyer from Alvinston.
• Ashley is enrolled in Wilfred Laurier University – Bachelor of Business Administration, Majoring in Business Administration.
• Ashley plans return to this area where he can provide accounting services to rural and farming clients.

• This year’s recipient is Savannah Morrison from Plympton-Wyoming.
• Savannah is enrolled at Brescia University College for the 2023 Fall term to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Science.
• Savannah is planning to pursue a degree in Education towards teaching Biology as well as Foods and Nutrition at the secondary level.

Patrick and Timothy Kerrigan Scholarship ($1,000)

• The Kerrigan scholarship was started in 1988 (with funding replenished last year in 2021 upon the passing of Tim).
• This year’s recipient is Luke Soetemans from Watford.
• Luke is enrolled in the Instrumentation and Control program at Lambton College.
• After graduation, Luke plans on working in the Sarnia-Lambton area so he can then save up and buy some farm property.

Bell One Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient is Gracie Goodhill from Watford; she is also a past recipient of the Bill & Dorothy Abraham scholarship.
• Gracie is enrolled in the third year of University of Guelph’s Food and Agricultural Business (Co-op program).
• After graduation, Gracie plans to work within the agri-business industry, specifically in finance or grain merchandising while helping out with her family’s field crop farm.

Bell Two Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient is Nicholas Gerrits from Wyoming Ontario; he is also a past recipient of the Anderson Scholarship.
• Nicholas is enrolled at the University of Manitoba, working towards a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, specializing in Plant Biotechnology.
• After graduation, Nicholas plans to do post-graduate or industry research on genetics for plant breeding or trait development or weed science.

Dona Stewardson Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient is Micah Van Ewyk from outside Courtright.
• Micah is enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology program, which is a joint program between Carleton University and Algonquin College.
• After graduation, Micah wants to work in the web development field.

Lois Wakefield Scholarship ($1,000)

• This year’s recipient is Tecla Gerrits from north of Petrolia.
• Tecla is enrolled at Brock University in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program.
• After graduation, Tecla wants become and ER nurse and advocate for farm safety.

Lambton County Women’s Institute Scholarship ($1,000)

• Last year, the Lambton County Women’s Institute entrusted the LFA with money to continue the scholarship in their name. This year is the first year we were in charge of awarding the scholarship and it is still going to Lambton County students entering their first or second year of full time studies at any college or university in Ontario that leads to their first degree or diploma.
• This year’s recipient is Emily Crowe from Sarnia.
• Emily is enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technologist program at Ontario Tech University.
• After graduation, Emily wants to focus on genetics of transfusion science, hoping to work at Sick Kids in Toronto.

Warden’s Scholarship

• The first scholarship of $2,000 was presented at the LFA annual meeting in January 2021 to Nathan Wilson who raised near Wyoming and is studying towards his Phd at Lakehead University in the Environmental Biotechnology program.
• The second scholarship of $2,000 was presented to Hannah Symington who lives near Watford. Hannah has recently graduated from the University of Guelph and this fall is enrolled in the Masters program in Weed Science at the Ridgetown Campus of the University of Guelph. In her application she states that she will be researching chemicals that control herbicide resistant waterhemp in corn and soybeans.

Joyce Anderson Scholarship ($2,000)

• Presented by Jane Anema of the Sarnia Community Foundation to Nicholas Gerrits, who lives near Wyoming. He is enrolled in the Plant Biotechnology program at the University of Manitoba. In his application he says that he is studying gene editing and plant breeding. He would like to see genetic changes to seeds to make today’s crops more resistant to the extreme weather conditions that we are experiencing. After obtaining his degree, he thinks that he would like to conduct research at a university on the benefits of altering cover crops.

Patrick and Timothy Kerrigan Scholarship ($1,000)

• Emily Griffin who lives near Sarnia. She is enrolled in her 2nd year at Lambton College studying Business Administration with an emphasis on accounting. She writes that she has served as the President of the South Lambton 4-H Dairy Club and has worked on a dairy farm for 6 years. Her plans after graduation is find employment as an accountant and to continue to assist her father on his sheep farm and perhaps to have a sheep farm of her own someday.

Bell One Scholarship ($1,000)

• Theresa Van Damme who lives near Alvinston. She is enrolled in her fourth year at the University of Guelph studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. She states in her application that she chose this program because she is very interested in the science and research side of agriculture. Over the last few years, she has watched the innovative changes that is occurring in the industry such as variable rate fertilizer application and robotic equipment steering and is excited about what farming will look like in the next 10 years. She wants to be part of the group that facilitates these changes.

Bell Two Scholarship ($1,000)

• Sarah Hayter of Alvinston. She is entering her second year of the Food and Agriculture Business Co op program at the University of Guelph. She states that this program is geared to offer the management, economic, technical and leadership skills to be successful in agribusiness and agriculture. After graduation she plans to travel to foreign countries to learn about their agricultural procedures before entering the workforce.

Dona Stewardson Scholarship ($1,000)

• Megan McGrail who lives near Wyoming. She is enrolled in her 5th year of Public Management at the University of Guelph. This program allows for co op work terms and she is currently serving a work term with Wanstead Co op. Megan says that she plans to continue working in the agriculture sector after she completes her Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Lois Wakefield Scholarship ($1,000)

• Nikki Boere who lives in Warwick Township. She is a recent graduate of North Lambton Secondary School and she will be attending McMaster University this fall enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Nursing program. She states that being raised on a pork farm has taught her the importance of team work to get the big jobs done. During high school she has served on student council and the Terry Fox Relay for Life committee. She says that while agriculture and health care are two different sectors of the economy, they both have a huge impact on people’s overall health. After graduating from the nursing program she would like to work as a nurse practitioner or perhaps enrol in medical school.

Joyce Anderson Scholarship ($2,000)

• Presented by Jane Anema of the Sarnia Community Foundation to Katlyn Griffith of Brooke Township who is a student of practical nursing at St. Clair College, Chatham Campus. She has worked part time as a PSW at London Health Science Centre as well as Meadowview Villa Long -term Care Facility in Petrolia.

Bill and Dorothy Abraham Scholarship ($1,000)

• Gracie Goodhill in Warwick Township. She is a recent graduate of North Lambton SS and she will be attending Guelph University this fall studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Food and Agricultural Business. In her application she states she is a 4^th generation farmer who works along side her family growing cash crops.

Patrick and Timothy Kerrigan Scholarship ($1,000)

• Eric Marsh of the Wyoming area. He is enrolled at Lambton College studying Chemical Production and Power Engineering Technology which is a 3 year program. He writes in his application that he has been a member of his local Legion for the past 4 years and he has served for the past 2 years on the Legion executive.

Bell One Scholarship ($1,000)

• Hannah Symington who lives near Watford. She is enrolled at the University of Guelph studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Crop, Horticulture and Turf Grass Science with a certificate in business. She states in her application that after she completes her degree she hopes to enrol in a Master’s Program in Weed Sciences. Since 2016, she has been the director and chairperson of the annual Alvinston Terry Fox Run.

Bell Two Scholarship ($1,000)

Dona Stewardson Scholarship ($1,000)

• Emma Darrach who lives near Petrolia. She is studying at McMaster University enrolled in a 4 year program towards an Honours Bachelor of Commerce. She states that after completing her educational degree she wishes to become a Chartered Professional Accountant. She has served on the executive of Petrolia’s Relay for Life and has acted as the master of ceremonies for the event.

Lois Wakefield Scholarship ($1,000)

• Emily Van Ewyk who lives in the Brigden area. She will be attending Lambton College this fall and is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program in Nursing.  This is a four year program. She says that she hopes to work one day for Bluewater Health at either the Sarnia or the Petrolia locations.

Don McCabe Scholarship ($1,000)

• Maggie Annett who lives near the village of Shetland. She is enrolled at the University of Guelph studying Wildlife Biology and Conservation. She writes that she grew up along the Sydenham River which is home to a number of endangered species. She says that it would be rewarding to develop and implement new ways to preserve natural habitats and to introduce these practices into the farming community.
• As for the 4-H connection to the scholarship, she writes that she has 4-H leaders for parents and this has allowed her to be heavily engaged in 4H for her whole life. The leadership skills that she has developed at various 4H leadership camps have been valuable in gaining employment and in leading group projects in her school.

Also announced at the August 20^th online event, Anne McGugan representing the Lambton County Women’s Institute awarded a scholarship to Kevin McGrail from the Wyoming area.

Jasmine volunteers at the Brigden Fair, and participates in many other local fairs, and mentors other young people who are starting to handle and enjoy horses. She hopes to find a career that includes both environment and agriculture.
